Baxter State Park

No — dogs are not allowed Dogs are not allowed anywhere in Baxter State Park — not on Katahdin, not on any trail, not in the campgrounds, and not in a vehicle on the Perimeter Road. The park's own regulation (94-293 Ch. 1, Rule 4.1) reads: "Pets or other domestic animals are not allowed in the Park." There is no seasonal or day-use exception and no kennel at the gate, so Appalachian Trail hikers finishing at Katahdin must arrange boarding outside the park in advance. The written rules do not address service animals — if you travel with one, phone Baxter HQ on 207-723-5140 before you go. For a leashed-dog alternative in the same country, Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument allows pets on a 6-foot leash. Policy verified against baxterstatepark.org on 17 Aug 2026.

Where dogs ARE allowed

Nowhere in the park. Rule 4.1 covers the whole 200,000+ acres with no area, seasonal or day-use exception — the Perimeter/Tote Road, all gatehouses, campgrounds and day-use parking are inside the Park boundary, so there is no lawful place to park with a dog in the vehicle either. The rules text contains no written service-animal or ADA clause and the park's accessibility page does not mention service animals, so anyone travelling with a service animal should call Park HQ (207-723-5140) in advance rather than rely on a website. Nearest dog-legal big-country alternative: Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, where NPS allows leashed pets ("all pets must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet (2 m) at all times").
