Partly — dogs are allowed in some of it
Mostly restricted, with one big exception worth planning around. Across most of Mesa Verde, the park's rule is that 'leashed pets are allowed on roads, parking lots, and paved areas on Mesa Top Loop and Park Point but not on trails, in ancestral sites or buildings.' But at Wetherill Mesa the park tells visitors to 'hike any trail with your pet except the trails into Step House and Long House' - so leashed dogs can genuinely hike here, and Wetherill Mesa is the reason to bring the dog to Mesa Verde at all. Wetherill Mesa Road is seasonal: in 2026 it is open daily 22 May to 21 October, the gate opens 8:30 am and last entry is 2:00 pm, so arrive early. Leash must be 6 ft or shorter. There is a kennel at Morefield Campground if you want to tour the cliff dwellings. Never leave a dog in the car - Mesa Verde interiors can rise nearly 20F in ten minutes even with the windows cracked, and the pavement burns unprotected paws. Where dogs ARE allowed
Leashed dogs may hike ALMOST EVERY TRAIL AT WETHERILL MESA - the park's own instruction is 'hike any trail with your pet except the trails into Step House and Long House.' That is real, substantial trail access and it flatly contradicts 'confined to roads and parking areas.' Elsewhere in the park, leashed dogs are limited to roads, parking lots and the paved areas at Mesa Top Loop and Park Point, and are barred from trails, ancestral sites and buildings. Wetherill Mesa Road is seasonal: open daily 22 May - 21 Oct 2026, entry gate 8:30 am, last entry 2:00 pm. A kennel operates at Morefield Campground (970-565-2133 for hours and pricing).
