Robert Moses State Park (Fire Island) — do not bring your dog expecting beach access. New York State Parks does not publish a pet policy for this park, but the statewide regulation bars leashed dogs from "bathing and picnic areas or on improved walks or boardwalks", which covers the swimming beach and the boardwalks, and the state's Long Island dog guide designates no dog-walking area here. However, this park is the trailhead for one that IS dog-friendly: park at Field 5 and walk 0.6 mile east on the boardwalk to the Fire Island Lighthouse, which is National Park Service land where leashed dogs (6 ft max) are welcome on the boardwalks and the bayside beach year-round. NPS closes its OCEAN beaches to pets 15 March through Labor Day for nesting shorebirds. Because the state park publishes nothing in writing, call the park at (631) 669-0449 before you rely on this. DISAMBIGUATION — there are two Robert Moses State Parks in New York, and they have opposite dog rules. This entry is the Long Island one (Babylon, NY 11702). The other, Robert Moses State Park – Thousand Islands (Massena), DOES allow up to two leashed pets in day-use areas and campsites, excluding Barnhart Beach and Cabins 1-7. Where dogs ARE allowed
CRITICAL: leashed dogs ARE allowed at the Fire Island Lighthouse, and the public route to it starts in this park's car park. NPS directs visitors to "Robert Moses State Park Field # 5" and then "walk east for 0.6 mile on boardwalks to the lighthouse." The lighthouse tract is Fire Island National Seashore, not state park, and FIIS states leashed dogs are permitted year-round "On park boardwalks" and "On bayside beaches at the Fire Island Lighthouse", with leashes "six feet in length or less". FIIS restricts pets on OCEAN beaches only "March 15 through Labor Day" for piping plover and least tern nesting — that is the genuine seasonal rule in this area, and it belongs to NPS, not to the state park. Within Robert Moses State Park proper, the state regulation still bars dogs from the bathing (swimming) beach and from improved walks and boardwalks.
