Partly — dogs are allowed in some of it
Dogs are welcome at Watkins Glen State Park — just not on the Gorge Trail. NYS Parks states plainly: "Pets are not allowed on the Gorge Trail." Everywhere else in the day-use area is open to them, including the north and south rim trails, which run along the top of the same gorge, are open year-round sunrise to sunset, and give you the overlooks without the waterfall staircase. Dogs are also allowed at campsites (max two per site). Rules: crated or on a leash no longer than 6 ft, supervised at all times, and staff can ask for proof of rabies vaccination. No dogs in park buildings, playgrounds, the pool or spray-ground (service animals excepted). Worth knowing: the Gorge Trail is seasonal — it opened 9 May 2026 and usually closes mid-October — so outside those months nobody is walking it. Confirm at parks.ny.gov before you drive.
Where dogs ARE allowed
Everywhere in the park's day-use areas EXCEPT the Gorge Trail. That explicitly includes the north and south rim nature trails, which run above the same gorge, are open all year sunrise to sunset, and are the standard dog route; plus the campground (max 2 pets per site), picnic and parking areas. Conditions: crated or leashed on a lead no longer than 6 ft, supervised at all times, rabies proof on request. Still off-limits: park buildings, playgrounds, the pool and spray-ground, guarded beaches (service animals exempt). Timing nuance that matters: the Gorge Trail is itself seasonal — it opened 9 May 2026 and typically closes mid-October — so for roughly half the year the pet restriction is moot because the trail is closed to everyone.
